<p>LIA: Amplitude is marking its 25th anniversary this year, with celebrations beginning in the United States. Why did you choose to start here?</p>



<p>Damien Buet, CEO, Amplitude: The United States has long been a strategic market for Amplitude, but the choice was also driven by the broader context. Photonics West is one of the most important international events for our industry. It brings together the full ecosystem—research, industrial users, and technology developers—in one place. Starting our anniversary year here allows us to reflect on our journey while engaging directly with the global photonics community in a setting that naturally encourages dialogue and exchange.</p>



<p>LIA: The anniversary comes at a time of significant activity for Amplitude. How does this moment reflect where the company is today?</p>



<p>Damien Buet: Reaching 25 years is an opportunity not only to reflect on our history, but also to assess where we are today and why we do what we do. Amplitude has grown alongside the laser industry, expanding from its scientific origins into industrial, medical, and life science applications, while maintaining a strong culture of technical excellence. Today, our focus is on developing innovative laser solutions that serve a clear purpose addressing real application needs, supporting long-term partnerships with customers and research institutions, and contributing in a meaningful way to the progress of science, industry, and society.</p>



<p>LIA: You’ve recently strengthened your leadership presence in the United States. Can you tell us more about that?</p>



<p>Damien Buet: Yes, we were very pleased to welcome Gerarda Evangelista to lead our U.S. operations. She brings more than 30 years of leadership experience in the global laser industry, spanning industrial, scientific, and commercial roles. Her deep understanding of both technology and markets is a strong asset for us. More importantly, it reflects our commitment to being closer to customers in the U.S. and to building a local organization that can support them effectively over the long term.</p>



<p>LIA: Amplitude has been actively involved in professional communities, including the Laser Institute of America, for many years. Why is that engagement important?</p>



<p>Damien Buet: Organizations like LIA play a critical role in structuring and advancing the laser industry, particularly in industrial applications. Our long-standing involvement, rooted in continuity and sustained by consistent involvement over the years, reflects our belief in collaboration —sharing expertise, contributing to technical discussions, and collectively addressing challenges such as process reliability, safety, and scalability. Events like ICALEO are especially valuable because they combine practical industrial insight with deep technical content.</p>



<p>LIA: Speaking of ICALEO, what are your expectations for this year’s event in Denver?</p>



<p>Damien Buet: ICALEO consistently offers a high level of technical exchange, and that’s what we value most. This year, we’re looking forward to engaging with peers and end users on how laser technologies are enabling advanced manufacturing and emerging applications. It’s also an opportunity to continue discussions with the community about where the technology is heading and how it can be translated into real-world impact.</p>

<p>As a first success stemming from this agreement, Amplitude has recently launched the <strong>FOCUS 920</strong>, a compact femtosecond Fiber laser, powered by indie’s ultrafast laser technology, designed for demanding bioimaging and neuroscience applications. Building on this foundation, the collaboration aims to expand Amplitude’s life sciences product portfolio and accelerate the development of next-generation multiphoton imaging solutions.</p>



<p>“Entering into this agreement with indie represents an important strategic milestone for Amplitude,” said <strong>Damien Buet, President &amp; CEO of Amplitude Laser Group</strong>. “It strengthens our offering in life sciences today with the <strong>FOCUS 920</strong>, and reflects our shared ambition to deliver high-performance, reliable, and accessible photonics solutions that support progress in bioimaging and medical research.”</p>

<p>Launched in the year of Amplitude’s 25th anniversary, the <strong>FOCUS 920</strong> further reinforces the company’s foothold in bioimaging and neuroscience applications. Compact, air-cooled and powerful, the system is engineered for exceptional reliability, ensuring stable operation and consistent performance over time—key requirements in research and clinical environments.</p>



<p>The FOCUS 920 is built around Amplitude’s HB-LH (High Brightness – Low Heat) concept, developed in close collaboration with indie to maximize image quality while preserving living samples. Its combination of short pulse duration and high pulse energy combined with low average power enables bright, high-contrast imaging while limiting sample heating and photodamage. This balance is key for long-term imaging and sensitive neuroscience and bioimaging experiments.</p>



<p>Within the life sciences sector, the FOCUS 920 addresses a broad range of bioimaging applications and complements Amplitude’s existing product portfolio for two-photon photostimulation in neuroscience. It is designed to support researchers working on advanced imaging and functional interrogation of neural circuits, where reliability, stability, and controlled femtosecond excitation parameters are essential.</p>

<p>Initial tests successfully validated the X-ray conversion efficiency and long-term stability using <strong>Amplitude’s <a href="https://amplitude-laser.com/products/femtosecond-lasers/lasers-for-science/magma/">MAGMA 25</a></strong> ultrafast laser. These results marked a major step toward high-performance, laser-based medical imaging.</p>



<p><em>&#8220;Supported by the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region from the outset, XPulse has now entered its second cycle,&#8221;</em> explains <strong>Antoine Courjaud</strong>, Product Line Manager at Amplitude. <em>&#8220;We are developing a new laser source — 10 times more powerful than in the initial phases, in order to record images 10 times faster&#8221;</em></p>



<p>This new-generation laser will be integrated by ALPhANOV into a unique tomographic imaging system, which will then be evaluated at the Imaging Center of the University Hospital of Bordeaux.</p>



<p>In addition to medical imaging, the laser-driven X-ray source jointly developed with ALPhANOV through XPulse also enables advanced applications such as time-resolved X-ray Diffraction for material science (photovoltaics) or microtomography for non-destructive testing.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-orange-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-6033e6004bcf3fe39b9ab7ec312af561"><strong>XPulse 2: Toward Clinical Validation</strong></h2>

<p>Launched in 2023 and continuing through to 2026, this second milestone aims to transform the XPulse prototype into a fully operational tomographic imaging system capable of conducting medical tests with laser-generated X-rays.</p>



<p>The system must demonstrate the relevance of the technology by validating four major differentiating factors in mammography:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Improved contrast and resolution</strong> of medical images</li>



<li><strong>Reduced radiation dose</strong> delivered to the patient</li>



<li><strong>Enhanced diagnostic accuracy</strong>, with fewer false negatives and better identification of false positives</li>



<li><strong>Improved patient comfort</strong>, thanks to <strong>compression-free breast imaging</strong></li>
</ul>



<p><strong>Project Funding</strong></p>



<p>XPulse Phases I &amp; II were co-funded by the European Union and the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region under the FEDER/FSE/IEJ Aquitaine programme, with a total combined funding amount of €2,398,145 (€1,337,020 for Phase I and €1,061,125 for Phase II).</p>



<p>XPulse 2 is now underway and is also co-funded by the European Union and the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region under the FEDER and FSE+ programme, with a total funding amount of €1,510,457.</p>

<p>Amplitude, global leader in ultrafast lasers, and Focused Energy, the company pursuing the most scientifically advanced path to commercial fusion, today announced a strategic partnership to advance the field of inertial fusion energy. This collaboration focuses on the development of two high-energy, high-repetition rate laser systems which will be installed at Focused Energy’s Laser Development Facility in the United States. The development is supported and financed by Germany’s Federal Agency for Breakthrough Innovations – SPRIND.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><span style="color: #ff5100;">A Strategic Partnership to Shape Fusion Energy’s Future</span></h3>



<p>Set to begin in early 2025 at Amplitude’s Lisses facility near Paris, the three-year development program builds on the global momentum for inertial fusion energy sparked by the fusion ignition breakthrough at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) in December 2022. This initiative places Amplitude at the forefront of worldwide efforts to develop clean energy solutions, leveraging cutting-edge laser technology to refine the parameters of Inertial Confinement Fusion and advance the promise of sustainable energy production.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><span style="color: #ff5100;">Amplitude and HZDR strengthen collaboration with new research lab</span></h2>



<p>Amplitude Laser Group and Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) are deepening their 18-year collaboration by launching a joint research laboratory in Dresden. Building on joint work with the high-power laser DRACO, the strategic partnership aims to advance laser diagnostics, components, and applications, with a focus on electron and proton acceleration.</p>



<p>The titanium-sapphire laser system DRACO (Dresden laser acceleration source) at HZDR is one of the pioneering facilities driving relativistic laser plasma physics for novel particle accelerator concepts. Installed in 2007 by Amplitude, the system has since evolved through a close partnership between Amplitude and HZDR to become one of the world-leading two-beam facilities that it is today.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><span style="color: #ff5100;">Driving Innovation with the Joint Laboratory</span></h2>



<p>The new joint laboratory will spearhead advancements in next-generation titanium-sapphire laser technologies around the DRACO laser, targeting high-energy and high-repetition rate systems with improved stability, temporal contrast, and performance. It will also support the development of secondary radiation sources and enable technologies that surpass current standards, including high-dose rate radiobiology in the context of cancer research and inertial fusion energy applications.</p>



<p>To strengthen this successful collaboration, Amplitude will dedicate Research and Development resources from its Lisses facility in France to Dresden. The laboratory’s work will focus on creating innovative solutions for laser technology, secondary sources, and laser metrology. Further bolstering these efforts, Amplitude will fund PhD positions at HZDR and establish a local team in Dresden, ensuring a strong and sustainable presence in the region.</p>



<p>Damien Buet, CEO of Amplitude Laser Group, states: “Our long-term collaboration with HZDR has laid the foundation for this exciting new chapter. The joint lab will drive innovation, pushing high-power laser technology to new heights and shaping a brighter future.”</p>



<p>Prof. Sebastian M. Schmidt, Scientific Director at HZDR, continues: “Thanks to Hi-Acts, our Helmholtz Innovation Platform for Accelerator-based Technologies &amp; Solutions, we are able to build strong collaborations with industry leaders like Amplitude Laser Group. Our new joint lab will give us many opportunities to transfer research directly into applications.”</p>



<p>The joint laboratory will follow a clear governance structure to ensure effective collaboration. The Steering Board, led by Prof. Ulrich Schramm, Director at HZDR’s Institute of Radiation Physics, and Dr. Pierre-Mary Paul, Vice President Advanced Laser Solutions at Amplitude, will guide strategic direction. Day-to-day operations will be managed by Project Management leads Stefan Bock (HZDR) and Émilien Gontier (Amplitude).</p>



<p>Prof. Dr. Ulrich Schramm highlights: “Recent breakthroughs in laser plasma accelerator research, like record-breaking proton energies or the demonstration of free-electron-lasing, originated from improved control over laser parameters on target. Advanced metrology and corresponding feedback to the laser chain will thus be essential to further progress.”</p>



<p>Dr. Pierre-Mary Paul concludes: “Advancing next-generation laser technologies allows us to push the boundaries of scientific research, enable groundbreaking applications using laser-based secondary sources, and lay the groundwork for scalable industrial solutions.”</p>

<p><span class="break-words "><span dir="ltr">This scientific publication introduces a NOVEL APPROACH to embedding adjustable waveplates into FLDW optical circuits. It achieves this by incorporating a layer of liquid crystal into the waveguide. Control over the liquid crystal&#8217;s orientation via applied voltage induces bias-dependent phase retardation, effectively acting as a voltage-dependent waveplate.</span></span></p>
